AAA Editor Notes
Pointe-à-Callière, Montréal Archaeology and History Complex (Pointe-à-Callière, Cité d'archéologie et d'histoire Montréal) is located on the corner of rue de la Commune at 350 Place Royale in Old Montréal (M: Place d’Armes). The museum is built atop actual remains of the original European settlement, parts of which are on display throughout several buildings connected by tunnels. An ongoing $60 million expansion project is underway and the latest sites to go on show, the Fort Ville-Marie-Quebecor Pavilion and the Memory Collector, opened in May 2017 to coincide with the museum’s 25th (and Montréal’s 375th) birthday celebrations. A multimedia show unfolds the history of Montréal, followed by an underground archeological tour.
Other highlights include the first Catholic cemetery, remains of the vaulted Little St-Pierre River, and an early Montréal sewer system and fortifications. A virtual installation depicting an 18th-century marketplace is also featured. Pointe-à-Callière presents two or three new local or international temporary exhibitions each year.
Guided tours are available. Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours, 30 minutes minimum.
