Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station & Museum
AAA Editor Notes
Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station & Museum is at 23645 SR 12 on Cape Hatteras. A precursor of today's U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Life-Saving Service was established in 1871 with a mission to rescue shipwreck victims. Commissioned in 1874, Chicamacomico was the first operational station in the state.
A collection of photographs, documents and rescue gear allows visitors a glimpse into the lives of dedicated service members. Also on the grounds are eight historic buildings, including a station and house dating from 1911 and 1907, respectively. The station's operations manager was featured in the 2008 Hollywood romance “Nights in Rodanthe”; the house itself is three blocks away. Summer programs, including reenactments of the breeches buoy drill, are offered.
Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
