Fort Peck Dam & Lake
AAA Editor Notes
Fort Peck Dam & Lake is on SR 24. The construction of the largest hydraulic earth-filled dam in the world created Fort Peck Lake, which offers excellent fishing, camping, boating, hiking, bird-watching and other recreation along its 130-mile length.
A testament to the human spirit, the dam was originally authorized in 1933 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who believed it would provide jobs for thousands of Depression-era people and serve as flood protection-a concern since the 1860s. Today, a hard-surfaced highway follows the crest of the dam 250 feet above the tunnel outlets.
Guided tours are available. Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
