Avalanche Creek

Avalanche Creek is on Going-to-the-Sun Rd. A deep, narrow gorge cut through brilliant red mudstone is filled with potholes scoured out by stones swirled in the foaming torrent. From the gorge a 2-mile trail travels to Avalanche Basin and Lake, a semicircular amphitheater with walls more than 2,000 feet high, over which plunge a half-dozen waterfalls. A nature trail with a boardwalk for physically impaired visitors leads to the gorge.
