AAA Editor Notes
USS Cairo Museum is opposite the national cemetery entrance at Milepost 7.8 in Vicksburg National Military Park. Displays include items recovered from the Union ironclad USS Cairo, which was sunk in the Yazoo River north of Vicksburg in 1862. The vessel is believed to have been the first sunk by an electrically detonated mine. A 6-minute audiovisual program recounts the salvage of the gunboat, which has been restored and is next to the museum.
