Galena & U.S. Grant Museum

Galena & U.S. Grant Museum, at 211 S. Bench St., highlights Galena's history. Exhibits about mining, steamboating and Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and the Civil War are featured along with period clothing and other artifacts. Featured in the 19th-century mansion is Thomas Nast's painting “Peace in Union,” depicting Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender to Grant. A 7-minute holographic presentation introduces visitors to the museum. Temporary exhibits also are available. The nearby Old Blacksmith Shop offers exhibits and demonstrations.
