AAA Editor Notes
Los Vaqueros Reservoir & Watershed is about 7 mi. s. on Walnut Blvd. to the north entrance gate. Covering approximately 20,000 acres, it offers fishing and an extensive trail system for hikers. The reservoir is stocked with game species that include rainbow trout, catfish and largemouth black bass. The Los Vaqueros Marina at the watershed's south entrance (accessible from Vasco Road at the Alameda/Contra Costa County line near Livermore) offers electric boat rentals, and there are four fishing piers along the shoreline.

Exhibits at the John Muir Interpretive Center relate the history of the area, explain the construction of the reservoir's dam and describe indigenous wildlife. A trail that begins next to the center goes to the top of the dam. You can also download a podcast trail tour onto your iPhone and embark on a 2-mile, moderately strenuous hike.

Note: Visitors taking the podcast trail tour should download it beforehand, since cell phone reception is spotty. Pets are not permitted, and outside boats cannot be brought into the watershed.

Recreational activities are permitted. Food is available.
