Betatakin Area

Betatakin Area is 2.5 mi. from monument headquarters by way of a strenuous 5-mi. round-trip trail. This is the monument's most accessible area. Ranger-guided tours depart daily at 8:15 a.m. and 10 a.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day (weather permitting). Hikers should arrive early to ensure a spot on these popular tours. The early tour is limited to 25 people per day on a first-come, first-served basis. The second tour at 10 a.m., which takes a different trail, also is limited to 25 people. The cliff dwelling also can be viewed across the canyon from the end of the Sandal Trail year-round via a 1-mile round-trip self-guiding walk.

Note: Sturdy shoes and 2 quarts of water are recommended; the high altitude, heat and steep grade of the trail make good physical condition a requirement. Allow 3-5 hours for tour.
