The Alaska Railroad departs from 411 W. First Ave. Narrated sightseeing tours on the Denali Star Train are offered northward between Anchorage and Fairbanks with stops at Wasilla, Talkeetna and Denali National Park and Preserve. The Glacier Discovery Train travels south from Anchorage to Whittier following the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet. Stops include Girdwood, Portage, Spencer Glacier—a whistle stop where passengers can take a 1.5-mile ranger-guided hike to see the glacier—and Grandview. The Coastal Classic Train runs from Anchorage to Seward and offers a glimpse of wildlife and glaciers.
Domed cars with glass-covered viewing platforms allow for 180-degree views. Special winter routes as well as excursions and connections to air, rail and boat tours are available.
