ZOOMAT

ZOOMAT (Zoológico Miguel Alvarez del Toro) is about 8 km (5 mi.) s.e. of downtown; a taxi ride is about $5 (U.S.). This is one of Mexico's most noteworthy zoos, named in honor of noted Mexican conservationist Miguel Alvarez del Toro. On exhibit is an impressive collection of more than 150 animal species native to Chiapas, including monkeys, tapirs, toucans, anteaters, owls, boa constrictors, iguanas and jaguars. The simulated habitats are so roomy that the animals housed within them appear to be roaming free through the lush vegetation.
