Church of the Conception

Church of the Conception (Iglesia de la Concepción) is about 2 blks. w. of the main plaza at calles Canal and Hernández Macías. It was begun in the mid-17th century, although the domed roof—one of the largest in Mexico—was not completed until 1891. While the exterior is worn, inside is a breathtaking retablo more than 30 feet tall, decorated with gilded wood and numerous statues. Also notable are the huge oil paintings in both transepts portraying events in the lives of Jesus and Mary.
