AAA Editor Notes
Puerto Nuevo is about 18 km (11 mi.) south of Rosarito via free Mex. 1. This tiny, unremarkable fishing village is known for one thing: some 30 restaurants specializing in Pacific lobster (langosta). Some have an ocean view and a touch of elegance; others are down-home places operated by local families. The menu at each is similar—a clawless lobster (ordered by size) sliced lengthwise and pan fried in lard, along with rice, refried beans and flour tortillas, plus melted butter and chile sauce on the side. Beverages are equally standardized, running to soft drinks, wine or beer.
Hucksters shout the merits of their particular establishment to potential customers, but the final decision boils down to ambience—or a line indicating popularity. Expect to pay about $20 to $25 (U.S.) per person for dinner. Dollars are accepted, but few restaurants take credit cards. Summer weekends are the peak dining time.
