Ecopark Kantun-Chi is on the inland side of Mex. 307, 22 km (14 mi.) s. of Playa del Carmen, 2 km (1.2 mi.) s. of Puerto Aventuras and just n. of Xpu-Ha Beach. The park entrance road, a short distance s. of the Barcelo Maya Hotel, is prominently signed with a billboard; a small faux pyramid stands at the turn-off.

The 1-hour guided tour of Kantun-Chi's underground cavern system begins when you descend (via wooden ladder) a deep hole that resembles a well. Several pools feature ceilings dripping with stalactites and have cold water that is inhabited by tiny cave fish. The dry sections of the cavern are festooned with more stalactite and stalagmite formations illuminated by colored lights. You can swim and snorkel in the pools. In addition to the underground caverns, visitors can explore four above-ground cenotes—pools sheltered under limestone overhangs—that are linked by jungle-lined pathways.

Snorkel masks, life jackets and lockers are included. Waterproof sport sandals are highly recommended, but you can get by with flip-flops. Walking through the dry sections of the underground cavern involves negotiating some tight passageways and low overhangs. Restrooms are on site. Children under age 7 are not permitted on the cave tour.
