Franz Mayer Museum

Franz Mayer Museum (Museo Franz Mayer) is at Av. Hidalgo #45 (Plaza de la Santa Veracruz), opposite the n. side of Alameda Park (M: Bellas Artes, lines 2 and 8). The former convent housing this museum dates from the second half of the 16th century. It was a hospital for much of its existence before closing in 1966; the building was restored and opened in 1989 to display the personal decorative arts collection of German-born Franz Mayer, a successful businessman in his adopted homeland.

Items on display include furniture, ceramics, paintings, sculptures, textiles, silver pieces and ivory, glass, tortoiseshell and enameled decorative objects from the 16th through the 19th centuries. The exhibit halls open onto a lovely colonial-style courtyard complete with clipped hedges and a fountain, a perfect spot to relax. Special temporary exhibitions are mounted regularly.
