Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge

Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge is 3 mi. s. on Hwy. 301 from Hwy. 101 at km 501 in Barrio Corozo on the way to Combate Beach. This bird-watcher's haven in the subtropical dry forest region is home to the endangered yellow-shouldered blackbird. The refuge features hiking trails, an observation tower and a visitor center.

The Cabo Rojo Salt Flats, on Hwy. 301 at km 11 on the way to Cabo Rojo Lighthouse, have been called the single most important point of convergence for migratory shorebirds in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The flats are a vital nesting ground for the snowy plover, least tern, peregrine falcon and brown pelican. The salt flats unit features a 5-mile bicycle trail.
