National Mexican Turtle Center

National Mexican Turtle Center (Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga) is about 12 km (7 mi.) west of Puerto Angel on the Puerto Angel-San Antonio highway, in the small seaside village of Mazunte. It is dedicated to the ongoing preservation of endangered sea turtle species inhabiting Mexican coastal waters. Prior to 1990, when the government imposed a ban on turtle hunting, the local economy depended upon the slaughter of turtles for their meat and leathery hides; the center's opening refocused efforts toward conservation. Sea turtles are on view in large tanks.
