To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago in the AAA Green Car Guide, which initially focused entirely on rating fuel-efficient, low-emitting vehicles.

For the 2021 edition, we've expanded the focus of the guide to include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and the development of autonomous vehicles.

How The Car Guide Rating Works
Test Results and Rankings:
The green cars tested by the ARC are evaluated on the basis of 13 categories: emissions, fuel economy, crashworthiness, braking, acceleration, handling, cargo-carrying capacity, ride quality, interior noise, ease of entry and exit, maneuverability, roominess, and visibility. The scores for the categories are totaled, and the cars are ranked from high to low.

Overall Observations
Hyundai eliminated the grille on its compact Kona SUV and replaced the gas engine with an electric motor and a 64-kWh battery. This powertrain swap literally adds a spark to the Kona's driving dynamics, making it a more engaging car to drive. Its 201-hp motor and 290 lb-ft of torque provide instant torque and decent acceleration, and its EPA-estimated 258-mile range is excellent for a moderately priced EV. The floor-mounted battery lowers the Kona's center of gravity, giving it stable and responsive handling around town and a smooth, comfortable ride on the highway. An adjustable regenerative-braking setup slows the car down aggressively or gradually, according to the driver's preferences. Room in the front of the cabin is adequate, but the backseat is somewhat cramped, cargo space is lacking, and an abundance of hard plastic creates a cheap appearance. The Kona Electric is pricey compared with its gas-powered sibling - up to $15,000 more - although some of that can be offset by a $7,500 federal tax credit. A strong complement of advanced safety features is standard, as well as convenience features such as heated seats, USB ports, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and Hyundai's connected-car system, Blue Link.
