Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago in the AAA Green Car Guide, which initially focused entirely on rating fuel-efficient, low-emitting vehicles.

For the 2021 edition, we've expanded the focus of the guide to include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and the development of autonomous vehicles.

How The Car Guide Rating Works

Test Results and Rankings:
The green cars tested by the ARC are evaluated on the basis of 13 categories: emissions, fuel economy, crashworthiness, braking, acceleration, handling, cargo-carrying capacity, ride quality, interior noise, ease of entry and exit, maneuverability, roominess, and visibility. The scores for the categories are totaled, and the cars are ranked from high to low.

Overall Observations
Forget what you thought you knew about the difference between a coupe (two doors) and a sedan (four doors). It's now a crazy, mixed-up world, thanks to models like the BMW 840i xDrive Gran Coupe. Blame the marketing folks for the misnomer; this large luxury car offers four full doors and a passable rear seat. The sloping roofline that's supposed to give it a coupe-like silhouette does impinge somewhat on entry and exit from the rear quarters, but it's not likely to be a deal breaker. And you'll forget all about that door conundrum when you slide into the driver's seat. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline 6-cylinder engine (335 hp), which sent power to all four wheels in our xDrive test model, produced excellent performance and a pleasing soundtrack. The adaptive suspension delivered impressively sporty handling, which made the 840i Gran Coupe fun to drive - although the ride was a bit on the firm side. Not surprisingly for a high-end luxury car, this four-door coupe comes with a long list of standard features, including adaptive LED headlights, a customizable digital dash, an infotainment display with navigation, a color head-up display, a wireless charging pad, and heated front seats, steering wheel, and armrest.
