Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago in the AAA Green Car Guide, which initially focused entirely on rating fuel-efficient, low-emitting vehicles.

For the 2021 edition, we've expanded the focus of the guide to include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and the development of autonomous vehicles.

How The Car Guide Rating Works
X
Test Results and Rankings:
The green cars tested by the ARC are evaluated on the basis of 13 categories: emissions, fuel economy, crashworthiness, braking, acceleration, handling, cargo-carrying capacity, ride quality, interior noise, ease of entry and exit, maneuverability, roominess, and visibility. The scores for the categories are totaled, and the cars are ranked from high to low.

Overall Observations
One incontrovertible fact is that parking a BMW 740i xDrive in your garage says "I've arrived" in more ways than one. Outside, BMW's flagship sedan is all classy lines and elegant details. Stately is the word that comes to mind, but with no hint of stuffiness. That impression continues inside the spacious and attractive passenger cabin. Premium materials are everywhere, as is just about every tech trick the German automaker has up its sleeve, including Gesture Control, which lets you do things like adjust the audio volume with the wave of your hand. Our test car's smooth 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine (335 hp) provided plenty of refined performance, although we did notice some rough idling on cold starts. The xDrive AWD system is bound to add a bit of assurance for those who drive in places where snowflakes fly. Handling is impressive for a full-size luxury sedan, thanks in part to the standard adaptive air suspension and electronically controlled shock absorbers. An assortment of drive modes makes it possible to tailor the 740i's performance to suit the driving circumstances, from relaxed long-distance freeway cruising to tackling a curvy stretch of back road with gusto.
